The South Indian Porutham system examines ten factors and treats each one as either matching or not matching. Tamil tradition places less weight on a single total and more on which poruthams are present, which are absent, and which of the absent ones matter most. The two systems touch similar ground, but their factor lists and weightings differ, so the same couple can receive somewhat different pictures from each. That is a difference of tradition, not a mistake.

What the 10 porutham broadly covers

Rather than reproduce a factor-by-factor table here, it is more useful to describe what the ten factors collectively examine. In general terms, they cover: the harmony between the two people's birth stars; the relationship between their Moon signs and the friendship between the planets ruling those signs; whether their natures and temperaments align; mutual attraction and accord; factors tied to family growth, progeny and health; and, treated as especially important in the Tamil tradition, checks concerning the longevity and long-term wellbeing of the married life.

Why birth details are essential

Some websites advertise "matching by name." Neither the 10 porutham nor Ashtakoot can be computed from a name. Both rest on the Moon's sign and natchathiram, and the natchathiram comes only from the date, time and place of birth.

Birth time matters in particular. The Moon moves through roughly one natchathiram a day, so a difference of a few hours can change the natchathiram and, with it, the outcome of several poruthams. Check a birth certificate, a hospital record or a family member's memory. If the exact time is not known, share what you do know rather than guessing; the more complete and accurate the details, the more accurate the result.

Preparing before you match

A little preparation saves time. Gather all six details in advance: date, time and place of birth for each person. An old handwritten jathagam usually records the birth time; if it is given in nazhigai and vinadi, convert it to hours and minutes first (one nazhigai is 24 minutes, counted from sunrise). If the birthplace is a small village, mentioning the nearest larger town as well helps.
