Pushkala Yoga: Inner Drive Meeting Emotional Grounding

What Pushkala Yoga is

Pushkala Yoga is a three-part alignment between the self (the lagna), the mind (the Moon, through its dispositor), and outside support (a benefic touching the lagna), all coming together at once.

The exact rule

Purohit's engine checks three conditions. First, the planet that rules the sign the Moon occupies (the Moon's dispositor) must sit together, conjunct in the same sign, with the lagna lord, the planet that rules the ascendant sign. Second, that shared sign the two of them occupy must itself be a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) counted from the lagna. Third, at least one benefic (Mercury, Jupiter or Venus) must either sit in the lagna itself or cast an aspect onto it. All three need to be true together for Pushkala Yoga to form.

Why this particular combination

The lagna lord represents the native's own drive and direction; the Moon's dispositor, through the Moon, represents the deeper emotional and mental undercurrent. When these two planets sit together, sharing one sign, and that shared placement lands in a structurally powerful kendra house, classical tradition reads it as inner drive and emotional grounding pulling in the same direction rather than working against each other. A benefic then touching the lagna on top of that adds a layer of outside support and grace to an already well-aligned foundation.

An example, illustrative only

Picture a chart where the lagna is Dhanu (Sagittarius), ruled by Jupiter, and the Moon sits in Simha (Leo), ruled by the Sun. If the Sun and Jupiter both sit together in Mesha (Aries), and Mesha is house 5 from Dhanu... to satisfy the kendra requirement, imagine instead the lagna is Meena (Pisces) and both planets sit together in Dhanu itself, house 10 from Meena, a kendra. If Venus also occupies or aspects Meena, all three conditions are met and Pushkala Yoga forms. This is a made-up, simplified example built only to show the mechanism, not a real chart.

What does not qualify

If the Moon's dispositor and the lagna lord sit in different signs, even if both are otherwise strong, Pushkala Yoga does not form: the rule specifically requires them to be conjunct, sharing one sign, not merely well-related by aspect or friendship. If that shared sign is not a kendra house, say it falls in the 3rd or the 9th instead, the pattern also fails, since the kendra placement is not optional. And even with a perfect conjunction in a perfect kendra, if no benefic either sits in the lagna or casts an aspect onto it, the third condition is left unmet and the yoga does not complete.

Why this yoga rewards internal alignment

Many classical yogas look at a single planet's strength in isolation; Pushkala Yoga is unusual in specifically rewarding two different significators, the self and the mind, working from the very same degree of the chart. Classical tradition reads this literal sharing of one sign as a kind of internal alignment: ambition and emotional undercurrent are not just compatible but are, in a sense, coming from the same place, with a benefic's blessing settling over that shared foundation.

How Purohit uses this

Purohit's kundli sheet and readings check Pushkala Yoga automatically, one of several placement-based yogas drawn from classical texts including the Phaladeepika. When it is present, Purohit names it directly and points to the exact planets and houses involved in your own computed chart. FAQ

What is a dispositor?

The planet that rules the sign a given placement sits in. The Moon's dispositor is whichever planet rules the sign the Moon itself occupies.

Does the lagna lord need to be strong on its own?

The rule as implemented does not add a separate strength requirement for the lagna lord beyond sitting conjunct the Moon's dispositor in a kendra house; that placement itself is the qualifying condition.

What benefic condition is required?

At least one benefic (Mercury, Jupiter or Venus) must either occupy the lagna itself or aspect it.

Does Purohit detect this automatically?

Yes, as part of the yoga detection included in every kundli sheet and reading.
