What Lakshmi Yoga is

Lakshmi Yoga ties good fortune directly to the 9th house, the house of dharma, higher purpose and one's own luck, and asks whether the person carrying that fortune (the lagna) is capable enough to hold it.

The exact rule

Purohit's engine checks two conditions. First, the planet that rules the 9th house from the lagna must be dignified, meaning it sits in its own sign or its exaltation sign, AND it must be placed in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) counted from the lagna. Second, the lagna lord itself must be strong: either dignified (own sign or exaltation), or placed in a kendra or a trikona house (1st, 5th or 9th). Both conditions need to hold for Lakshmi Yoga to form.

Why the 9th lord and the lagna lord together

The 9th house is read classically as the house of dharma, fortune, higher learning and one's father; a well-placed, dignified ruler of that house sitting in a powerful kendra suggests that fortune is not just present but active and accessible in the native's life. But fortune sitting untapped means little without someone capable of using it, so the rule also requires the lagna lord, standing for the native's own capability, to be strong in its own right. The combination is read as good fortune and grace meeting a self genuinely equipped to make use of it.

An example, illustrative only

Picture a chart where the lagna is Mithuna (Gemini), ruled by Mercury, so the 9th house from it is Kumbha (Aquarius), ruled by Saturn. If Saturn sits in Makara (Capricorn), its own sign, and Makara happens to be a kendra house from this lagna (the 8th, in this case, is not a kendra, so picture instead Saturn sitting in Tula, its exaltation sign, landing in house 4 from Mithuna, a kendra), and Mercury (the lagna lord) sits in its own sign Kanya, both conditions are met and Lakshmi Yoga forms. This is a made-up, simplified example to show the mechanism, not a real chart.

What does not qualify

A 9th lord that is dignified but sitting in a house other than a kendra, say the 5th or the 11th, does not form Lakshmi Yoga, since dignity alone is not enough without the kendra placement. A 9th lord correctly placed in a kendra but not actually dignified there, sitting in a friend's sign rather than its own or its exaltation sign, also fails the first condition. Even with a perfect 9th lord, a lagna lord that is debilitated and sitting outside any kendra or trikona breaks the pattern entirely, since the rule treats the native's own capability as a genuine, separate requirement rather than an afterthought.

How this differs from other fortune-themed yogas

Purohit's yoga family includes several patterns built around fortune and the 9th house, each with its own distinct rule; Lakshmi Yoga is not interchangeable with Amala Yoga (built around the 10th house) or Sreenatha Yoga (built around Venus, Mercury and the 9th lord together).
