Parvata Yoga: Mountain-Like Stability

What Parvata Yoga is

Parvata means mountain, and this yoga describes a particular kind of resilience: strength that holds its shape under pressure because the chart's more difficult houses have been kept clear of additional strain.

The exact rule

Purohit's engine checks two conditions together. First, at least one benefic (Mercury, Jupiter or Venus) must occupy a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) counted from the lagna. Second, houses 6 and 8 from the lagna must each be either completely empty, or occupied only by benefics, never by a malefic (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu). Both conditions must hold for Parvata Yoga to form.

Why these particular houses

The kendra houses are the chart's structural pillars, and a benefic present in even one of them provides a genuine source of grace or comfort. But houses 6 and 8 are read classically as dusthana houses, associated with conflict, illness, debt and sudden disruption; a malefic sitting in either one tends to sharpen those difficult themes. Parvata Yoga specifically checks that this disruptive potential has not been activated: the benefic's support in a kendra is not being undercut by a malefic actively working the 6th or 8th house. The resulting stability, classical tradition holds, is less about dramatic gain and more about resilience: a mountain that stays standing rather than a peak reached suddenly.

An example, illustrative only

Picture a chart where the lagna is Kanya (Virgo). If Jupiter sits in Meena (Pisces), house 7 from Kanya, a kendra, and houses 6 and 8 from Kanya (Makara and Mesha) are either empty or hold only Venus and Mercury, with no Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in either, both conditions are satisfied and Parvata Yoga forms. This is a made-up example to show the mechanism, not a real chart.

What does not qualify

A benefic sitting outside every kendra house, say in the 2nd or the 9th, does not satisfy Parvata Yoga's first condition, even if houses 6 and 8 are perfectly clean; the benefic specifically needs to be in a kendra. On the other side, a chart with a well-placed benefic in a kendra but a malefic also sitting in house 6 or house 8 does not qualify either, since even one malefic in either of those two houses breaks the pattern. The rule does not require multiple benefics or multiple kendras to be filled, only the minimum of one benefic in one kendra alongside genuinely clean 6th and 8th houses.

How this compares to Chatussagara Yoga

Parvata Yoga and Chatussagara Yoga both involve the kendra houses, but they ask different questions: Chatussagara wants every kendra occupied by some planet, without caring what happens in houses 6 and 8, while Parvata wants only one kendra to hold a benefic but adds a specific purity requirement on houses 6 and 8. A chart can carry one without the other, and Purohit reports each on its own terms rather than merging them.

How Purohit uses this

Purohit's kundli sheet and readings check Parvata Yoga automatically, one of several placement-based yogas sourced from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. When it is present, Purohit names it directly and shows, from your own computed chart, which benefic occupies the qualifying kendra and confirms houses 6 and 8 are free of malefics. FAQ

Which houses does Parvata Yoga check besides the kendras?

Houses 6 and 8 from the lagna, which must each be either empty or occupied only by benefics, never by a malefic.

How many benefics need to be in a kendra?

At least one. Purohit's engine requires only that a benefic occupy some kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th); it does not require all four kendras to hold benefics.

Why are houses 6 and 8 checked specifically?

Houses 6 and 8 are read classically as more disruptive, challenge-bearing houses (health, conflict, sudden change). Keeping them free of malefics is read as protection from their more difficult effects.

Does Purohit detect this automatically?

Yes, as part of the yoga detection included in every kundli sheet and reading.
