Rahu in Vedic Astrology: Significance, Dasha and Remedies

What Rahu signifies

Rahu is the north lunar node, one of two shadow points, chayagrahas, in Vedic astrology rather than a physical planet: the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic moving northward. Because it has no physical body, Rahu has no light of its own and is read as taking on and intensifying whatever it touches, classically associated with obsession, ambition beyond convention, foreign connections, sudden material rise and a hunger that is rarely satisfied even when it succeeds. A well placed Rahu is read as unusual, outsized success achieved through unconventional means; a poorly placed one as confusion, deception, or an obsession that never quite resolves into genuine fulfilment. Rahu is also associated with foreign travel, foreign residence and unconventional or emerging fields, technology, aviation and research among them, which is part of why the modern chart increasingly leans on Rahu's placement when reading questions about life abroad.

Dignity: exaltation and debilitation

Rahu is classically considered exalted in Taurus and debilitated in the opposite sign, Scorpio, the same axis, reversed, as Ketu's own exaltation and debilitation, since the two nodes always sit exactly 180 degrees apart in any chart. Because Rahu is a shadow point rather than a physical body, our engine does not assign it an own sign or a moolatrikona the way it does for the seven classical grahas; some traditions treat Aquarius as an informal co-lordship for Rahu, but this is a framework variation worth naming rather than a fact carried in our own dignity tables.

Vimshottari dasha: 18 years

Rahu's mahadasha runs for 18 years in the Vimshottari system, one of the longer periods among the nine. Classical texts describe a Rahu mahadasha as a period capable of dramatic material rise, unconventional opportunity, travel abroad or unusual, sometimes obsessive, ambition, with the actual tone depending heavily on Rahu's own placement, its dispositor's strength, and any aspects it receives, since a shadow graha with no fixed nature of its own leans hard on its surroundings for how it plays out.
