Ketu in Vedic Astrology: Significance, Dasha and Remedies

What Ketu signifies

Ketu is the south lunar node, the second of the two shadow points, chayagrahas, in Vedic astrology, the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic moving southward, always positioned exactly opposite Rahu in any chart. Where Rahu is read as worldly hunger and expansion, Ketu is read as detachment, spirituality, the residue of past effort, and a pull away from the material world even when material success is available. A well placed Ketu is read as deep intuition, genuine spiritual insight or expertise arrived at almost effortlessly; a poorly placed one as confusion, isolation, or a sense of disconnection from one's own goals. Ketu is also classically associated with moksha, spiritual liberation, and with skills that seem to arrive from a past life rather than being consciously learned in this one, which is why its placement is read closely in charts that show unusually early technical or artistic ability.

Dignity: exaltation and debilitation

Ketu is classically considered exalted in Scorpio and debilitated in the opposite sign, Taurus, mirroring Rahu's own axis in reverse. As with Rahu, our engine does not assign Ketu an own sign or a moolatrikona, since these dignity tables are built for the seven physical grahas; some traditions informally connect Ketu to Scorpio's co-lordship, worth naming as a framework variation rather than an engine computed fact.

Classical tradition treats Ketu, like Rahu, as behaving largely like its dispositor, and for many practical purposes, transit reckoning among them, as acting like Mars in temperament even though it is scored like Saturn for the specific gochar table below; Ketu's association with sudden, sharp detachment and its rulership of Mesha's dispositor Mars in the exaltation axis both point to this classical overlap.

Vimshottari dasha: 7 years

Ketu's mahadasha runs for 7 years in the Vimshottari system, tied with Mangal for one of the shorter periods among the nine, and it is also the very first period in the standard Vimshottari sequence, starting from Ashwini nakshatra. Classical texts describe a Ketu mahadasha as a period of detachment, sudden endings, spiritual searching or unexpected loss of interest in things that previously mattered, alongside genuine intuitive or research related gifts when Ketu itself is well placed, a short but often intense seven years.

Classical tradition associates a challenging Ketu with remedies such as reciting the Ketu mantra or the Ganesha Chalisa, worshipping Lord Ganesha, cultivating a genuine spiritual practice rather than suppressing the pull toward detachment, and wearing cat's eye (lehsunia) only after proper astrological confirmation that Ketu genuinely needs a specific remedy in that particular chart. Ketu is the very first dasha lord in the standard Vimshottari sequence, so nearly every chart begins its dasha timeline under Ketu's residual seven years in some form, whether that period has already passed in childhood or, for a Moon placed differently at birth, arrives later once the earlier lords have run their course. Ketu's own house placement is also read as the area of life where a native shows unusual, almost inherited skill with surprisingly little conscious effort, alongside the same area's potential for sudden disinterest.
