What Chandra (the Moon) signifies

Chandra, the Moon, is arguably the single most important graha in Vedic astrology for a person's inner life: it governs the mind, emotions, instinctive reactions and the mother. Where the ascendant shows the body and Surya shows the soul's steady core, Chandra shows how a person actually feels moment to moment, which is exactly why Vedic astrology reads the Moon sign, not the Sun sign, as the primary lens for daily and monthly predictions such as rashifal. A strong Chandra is classically associated with emotional stability and a calm, nourishing presence; a weak or afflicted one with anxiety, moodiness or a restless mind.

Dignity: exaltation, debilitation and own sign

Chandra is exalted at 3 degrees of Taurus and debilitated at the opposite point, 3 degrees of Scorpio. Its one own sign is Cancer, but its moolatrikona is unusual among the nine grahas: it falls in Taurus, from 4 to 30 degrees, not in Cancer at all, the single classical exception where a graha's zone of greatest textbook dignity sits outside its own sign. A Chandra placed in this Taurus zone is read as unusually stable and content.

Directional strength: dig bala

Chandra's dig bala house is the fourth from the ascendant, the house of home, mother and inner emotional comfort, a natural pairing for a graha whose whole nature is feeling and nurture. A Chandra placed in or near the fourth house draws on this directional strength in addition to any dignity from sign placement.

Friendships with other grahas

Chandra is classically read as a natural friend of the Sun and Mercury, and neutral, never actively hostile, toward Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Chandra is the only graha in the classical table with no listed enemy at all, which fits its reputation as the most universally adaptable and rarely combative of the nine.

Vimshottari dasha: 10 years

Chandra's mahadasha runs for 10 years in the Vimshottari system. Classical texts describe this period as one that brings emotional and domestic themes to the front: matters connected to the mother, the home, travel, and the general rise and fall of the mind's own stability, often showing real fluctuation within the ten years rather than one flat tone throughout, mirroring the Moon's own waxing and waning nature.
