Introducing Purohit: An AI Astrologer Built to Show Its Work

Purohit is a Vedic astrologer you can talk to on WhatsApp, built by a small team that refuses to choose between the science of astronomy and the discipline of classical Jyotish. We built it because we wanted both taken seriously, at the same time, without either one being watered down for the sake of the other.

Before we describe what Purohit does, it helps to say plainly what we believe, because the product follows directly from the belief.

The astronomy is real

Every chart Purohit casts starts from an actual measurement of the sky, not a shortcut. We use the Swiss Ephemeris, the same high precision astronomical calculation library that serious astronomy software and rigorous Jyotish tools rely on, to compute planetary positions to arc-minute precision. We use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the standard reference point for Vedic astrology and is different from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology.

None of this comes from a static table generated years ago, and none of it is approximated. When Purohit tells you where Jupiter sat in your ninth house at the moment of your birth, that placement was calculated from your birth date, time, and location, run through the same orbital mechanics that observatories use. If the astronomy is going to be the foundation for anything we say about your chart, it has to be exact, and we built the engine to be exact rather than convenient.

We think this matters more than it might sound like it does. Astrology has a long history of tables copied from other tables, rounding errors that compound over decades, and shortcuts that quietly drift from the actual sky. Purohit does not carry that baggage. The planets are calculated fresh, every time, from first principles.

The tradition is real too

Getting the astronomy right is only half of the obligation. The other half is treating the interpretive tradition, classical Jyotish, with the same seriousness rather than flattening it into horoscope-column generalities.

Purohit's interpretive layer is grounded in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the foundational classical text of Parashari astrology, and the doctrine built on top of it over centuries. A few of the tools this tradition gives us, in plain language:

Vimshottari dasha

This is the classical timeline of planetary periods: a sequence that maps out which planet is considered dominant in your life during which years, based on the Moon's position at birth. It is one of the primary tools classical Jyotish uses for timing events, and Purohit computes it precisely rather than approximating the boundaries between periods.

Yogas

These are specific combinations of planets, houses, and signs that classical texts assign particular meanings to, some auspicious, some cautionary. A yoga is not a vague pattern we eyeball; it is a defined configuration with a specific classical basis, and Purohit checks your chart against these definitions directly.

Doshas

These are afflictions or imbalances that classical texts flag as worth paying attention to, most famously Mangal dosha (a Mars placement pattern relevant to marriage compatibility). We compute doshas according to their classical rules rather than declaring one present or absent by feel.

Kundli milan

Also called ashtakoot matching, this is the traditional thirty-six point compatibility system used to assess a potential match between two charts. It is not a single yes-or-no verdict; it is a structured comparison across eight distinct factors, and Purohit shows you the breakdown rather than only the total.

None of this is diluted for the sake of a friendlier chat experience. It is computed the way classical Parashari astrology specifies, and then explained in plain words.

Why this combination creates an obligation

Here is the part we think matters most. If you take real astronomy seriously and you take a real interpretive tradition seriously, you inherit an obligation: when you tell someone something meaningful about their life, you should be willing and able to show your work.

So Purohit is built to be checked, not merely trusted.

Ask "why did you say that," at any point in a conversation, and you will get the actual planet, house, and degree behind the claim, not a rephrased version of the same sentence. If Purohit tells you your career period is favorable right now, it can point to the specific dasha period and the placements driving that read.

We also do not trust our own code by default. We cross check the engine's output against classical reference tables and independent tools, including Drik Panchang and PyJHora, rather than assuming our implementation is correct simply because it runs without errors. When calculations disagree, we treat that as a bug to find, not a detail to ignore.

We are also honest about where a claim comes from within the tradition. Vedic astrology is not one single unified system: Parashari astrology, KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati), and Jaimini astrology are distinct schools of thought, and they do not always agree with each other on method or emphasis. When a claim rests on a school-specific technique, we say which school it is, rather than presenting one tradition's view as the only possible answer. And we distinguish clearly between what is long-established classical doctrine and what is a newer or more debated technique, so you know which kind of ground you are standing on.

What Purohit will not claim

We will not tell you that astrology is "scientifically proven" in some absolute sense, because that overstates what can honestly be said, and we would rather be precise than persuasive. What we can say honestly is narrower and, we think, more useful: the astronomical calculations are exact, the interpretive framework is a real and long-standing tradition, and we will always tell you which of the two is doing the talking in any given answer.

We also will not traffic in fatalism or fear. Purohit does not deal in doom-laden predictions designed to unsettle you into a purchase, and it will not manufacture urgency about a remedy or a reading. A dosha is information to understand, not a crisis to be frightened out of.

Finally, Purohit does not give medical or legal advice, and it will say so directly if a question drifts into that territory. Jyotish speaks in its own vocabulary about health, relationships, and timing, and that vocabulary is not a substitute for a doctor or a lawyer.
