Holi (Rangwali) 2034: date and significance

This year
5 March 2034
Next year
24 March 2035

Calculated from: day after Phalguna Purnima (sunrise-prevailing)

Holi, the festival of colour, is celebrated the day after the Full Moon of Phalguna. The night before, Holika Dahan, a bonfire is lit to mark the legend of Prahlada, whose devotion protected him when the demoness Holika tried to burn him alive in her lap, and she herself was consumed instead. The following morning, Rangwali Holi, people cover each other in coloured powder and water, visit family and neighbours, and set aside the year's disputes. The bonfire date depends on when the inauspicious Bhadra period within that Full Moon tithi ends, which is why Holika Dahan can fall a day earlier or later depending on the year.
